Assessment & Diagnosis

A Psychological Assessment is comprised of a series of tests and other assessment tools to measure and observe a client’s behavior to arrive at a diagnosis or to build a profile of their capabilities and personality. The results of the Assessment can be used to guide treatment and/or make recommendations for school placement or exam accommodations.

The type of Assessment to be conducted is determined by the needs of the client. Parents are advised on which test tools and techniques are most suitable to collect the necessary information for their child at that point in time.

Types of Assessment and Diagnosis conducted by REACh include:

  • Autism Spectrum Disorder
  • ADHD
  • I.Q. Assessment
  • School Placement: To determine a child’s ability across a range of areas and to better guide parents for school placement recommendations, i.e. Mainstream schools or Special schools
  • Exam Accommodations The purpose of this assessment is towards obtaining accommodations for national papers, i.e. PSLE, GCE ‘O’ Levels, etc., whereby we assess the child’s need for Mother Tongue exemption, extra time, sitting for the paper in a smaller classroom, etc.
  • School Readiness Assessment: For children with or without special needs. This test determines a child’s suitability for school placement.
  • Development Delay
  • Specific Learning Difficulties: i.e. Specific Language Impairments, Reading and Comprehension Difficulties.

When deciding on the Assessment the following is taken into consideration:

  • The purpose of the Assessment
  • Whom the Assessment is being done for
  • The age of the client
  • If any previous assessments have been conducted

A diagnosis is useful to have for the following reasons:

  • Helps families to understand why their child may experience certain difficulties
  • Allows families to access services and support for their child
  • Helps to understand the needs of the child and the family at the point of diagnosis
  • Allows us to plan the best approach to help the child and family
